Plant Identification

Plant Identification

if you're interested in trying to identify a plant yourself, our favorite tools are:
  • iNaturalist: it's available on the web and in an app. It's a joint initiative of the California Academy of Sciences and the National Geographic Society. The tool will attempt to automatically identify a plant (or insect, animal...) using one or more photos.
  • Pl@ntNet is similar to iNaturalist, with app and web versions.
  • The PictureThis app allows free plant id's, but they try to get people to sign up for a paid membership.
  • If you use Facebook, the Plant Idents group lets you tap into the expertise of a wide range of people.
Most tools require a user account, so it's up to you whether or not you want to use them. Of course, there's no requirement to use a tool—we're happy to help. But the more information you provide the greater the chance of success. When using photos for identification, multiple views are useful, both close ups and the overall plant.
